Robert Mackey is a reporter for The New York Times, where he writes and produces the news blog The Lede. He was previously a Web producer on the Foreign desk of The Times, working on multimedia features for NYTimes.com. He has written, blogged and shot video for The Times and has also written for GQ and Slate, shot photographs for Wired, produced radio segments for The Al Franken Show and produced television reports for the Associated Press, Britain's Channel 4 and the United Nations.
Mackey grew up in both suburban New York and rural Ireland. He has an undergraduate degree from the University of Pennsylvania and studied film production at New York University. He left New York in 1994 to work on a U.N.-sponsored television program in the former Yugoslavia and was based in Zagreb for the last two years of the wars in Bosnia and Croatia. After spending the next three years working in television news in London, he returned to New York in 1999 and started working for The Times in 2000.
